"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Sun Tzu, The Art of War

This morning on my way to office, I suddenly wanted to know how ChatGPT think(if I can put it this way) about itself in terms of a human competitor. So pretending knowing nothing, I summoned ChatGPT and ask few questions.

Who are you, ChatGPT?

We started by discussing what ChatGPT is and how it affects our lives. It explained that ChatGPT is an AI language model that can generate human-like responses to text prompts. It said while it has the potential to be a useful tool in various industries, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on most people's day-to-day lives.

On the importance of preparing for life with AI systems like ChatGPT, it said, while there may not be much individuals can do to directly prepare for the technology, it's important to stay informed about AI developments and to consider the ethical implications of AI use.

Why are you so important to our future?

I was a bit surprised at its humble (or disguised) reply. So I asked back more directly why then people and media pay so much attention to ChatGPT, and it became more honest this time. It said, "it is true that artificial intelligence, including language models like ChatGPT, has the potential to shape the future in significant ways."

While slightly boasting on its comparative advantage of efficiency and extensiveness, it didn't forget to be humble again enough to point out its weakness, saying AI systems may not always be the best option for handling complex issues, as they lack the ability to think critically and make nuanced decisions that take into account a wide range of factors.

Are you a collaborator or a competitor of human?

Hearing its nuanced relpy, I was wondering whether ChatGPT consider human as a master, collaborator, or competitor. Staring with my qestion on the future hierarchy in society and industries, we discussed how AI systems may be complementary to human workers, rather than replacing them entirely. While AI systems may be capable of handling certain tasks more efficiently than humans, they lack the unique skills and qualities that humans possess, such as creativity, intution and empathy.

Do you belive human beings become unnecessary in the future?

The anwer gave me an impression that it consider itself better in all other areas except those few areas. So I asked more directly whether it sees human beings become unnecessary in the technically advanced future. The answer is somewhat scary, not relieved. Although it said there may be certain tasks or issues where human agents will always have an advantage over AI systems, and Humans will always have an important role to play, it already consider we human not a master or a controller but a cowoker in the futuer society.

Comforting or Warnings?

Overall, our conversation highlighted the potential benefits and challenges of AI systems like ChatGPT, and the importance of approaching their development and use with caution and consideration for their potential impact on society. The most striking points may be hidden in its very diplomatic warning : "it is important to keep in mind that human agents also continue to learn and improve their skills over time." Okay, I got it. if we don't try hard to learn and improve our skills, we will become useless in the future.
